Student Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Jurnalistik – HMJ)

The Journalistic Student Association (HMJ) of the Faculty of Communication Science, Padjajaran University, was established in 1987. Initially, the association was named Himajur, but it later changed its name to HMJ during Agus Suhadi’s leadership in 1988. This name change was done because the name Himajur was considered weak.

HMJ was the first association to be established in the Faculty of Communication Science. Its existence served as a catalyst or driving force for the establishment of other student associations in the Faculty of Communication Science. The formation of HMJ was based on the purpose of fulfilling the needs of journalism students, namely to train students’ soft skills to foster independence and foster closer relationships among students. Additionally, HMJ was formed based on the principles of kinship and aimed to develop the potential of its members in the field of journalism.

The association has its own HMJ Anthem (Mars HMJ) composed by Didith, and its members wear a distinctive association jacket called “jahim” as the identity of HMJ. The logo displayed on the jacket symbolizes the alertness of journalists, depicted by the image of a walking person. The blue globe signifies that journalists must have a universal perspective as vast as the ocean and as high as the sky, reflecting the meaning of the color blue throughout the jahim. On the left sleeve of the jahim, there are two white circular lines symbolizing professionalism and idealism, while the phrase “4 Estate” on the right sleeve signifies that the press is the fourth pillar after the judiciary, legislature, and executive branches.
